On Keeping a Creativity Journal
Lessons learned from nurturing a practice at the intersection of spirituality and creativity.
Back in 2021, I created a small booklet to use as a creativity journal. It was 8 pages long, I made it on the free version of Canva. I printed it out for myself monthly and offer it as a free download on my website.
This little booklet helped me create a space where I could explore images and symbols that were recurring in my daily life, and sometimes in my dreamtime. It helped me carve out time and space to set intentions specifically dedicated to my creative and spiritual practices. It was a space to explore, record notes, ideas, insights, and questions. A place to commune with the Muse.
After a few months of printing the booklet, adding a few extra prompts and exercises, the booklet continued to grow until it became a 30 page workbook. The experience of keeping a monthly creative journal focused on how creativity and spirituality were intersecting forces in my life helped me not only nurture my creative and spiritual practices, it also helped me gain more awareness about how images were speaking to me, or more accurately, how my soul was communicating with me through images, ideas, questions, and symbols.
In 2023, I decided to make the journal more permanent, and also more real by sharing it with my community in the form of a printed booklet. A handful of friends and family supported my endeavor and purchased a copy. I’ve received good feedback from people who use it. I am happy that a tool, a companion I helped bring into the world is helping other creative and spiritual seekers out there get closer to their soul.
I’ve been thinking about what I’ve learned from keeping this journal, here a few of the lessons I’ve learned.
Creativity and spirituality are not only intersecting forces, they can be the same thing.
The mundane (daily life) is where the rubber meets the road, it is not to be ignored or forgotten.
Your creative and spiritual practice is meant to support the mundane/daily life, it’s the foundation where you root yourself to go on with your days.
Images and symbols will speak to you if you pay attention. The whole universe will speak to you if you learn to listen.
You don’t need to make instagram “worthy” art. Art is subjective, as long as you are creating what feels good that is all that matters.
It’s okay to leave empty pages.
What you pay attention to grows.
Creativity, imagination, dreams, prayers are all happening in the same realm, the imaginal realm.
The activities you do everyday are a creative action.
